On Thursday, Cricket South Africa (CSA) CEO Pholetsi Moseki expressed enthusiasm as the brand identity and venues for the upcoming 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup were revealed in Johannesburg. The event showcased 12 venues across eight South African cities, along with three in Zimbabwe and Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, selected for the tournament.

A Historic Return to Africa

This prestigious 50-over tournament marks a significant return to Africa after 24 years, with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia set to co-host the event. The last time the continent hosted the World Cup was in 2003, when South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya collaborated as co-hosts.

Theme and Vision of the Tournament

The 14th edition of the World Cup will feature the top 14 teams globally, centered around the theme 'Three Nations, One Heartbeat.' This theme celebrates the unity, diversity, and community values shared by the three host nations. Since co-hosting the 2003 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, South Africa has hosted several major ICC events, including the inaugural ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in 2023. Zimbabwe, which co-hosted the 2003 World Cup, returns as a host nation, while Namibia will host its first senior ICC event, having recently co-hosted the ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup.

New Tournament Format Details

The 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will consist of 57 matches and introduce a new three-stage format designed to enhance competitiveness and engage fans more effectively.

Three-Stage Structure

The tournament will kick off with a Super Series featuring the three lowest-ranked teams (12th to 14th) competing in a round-robin format. The winner will progress to the next stage, which includes 12 teams divided into two groups of six, each playing a round-robin schedule. The top three teams from each group, along with the best fourth-placed team, will qualify for the Super 7 stage, consisting of 21 round-robin matches. The top four teams will then advance to the semi-finals, with the first-placed team facing the fourth-placed team, and the second-placed team meeting the third-placed team for a spot in the final.
