European Teams Secure World Cup Spots
As the competition for the final six slots in the FIFA World Cup heats up, several nations have successfully clinched their places during the European playoffs. Notable among them are four-time champions Italy, Sweden, Turkiye, and Denmark, according to reports from various media outlets.
Italy, competing in Path A, triumphed over Northern Ireland with goals from Sandro Tonali in the 56th minute and Moise Kean in the 80th minute. They will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the finals, who advanced after defeating Wales 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regular time.
In Path B, Sweden secured a 3-1 victory against Ukraine, thanks to a hat-trick from Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres, who scored in the 6th, 51st, and 73rd minutes. Ukraine managed to net a goal late in the game through Matviy Ponomarenko. Sweden will now compete against Poland, who overcame Albania 2-1 with goals from Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski.
Turning to Path C, Turkiye edged out Romania with a narrow 1-0 win, courtesy of Ferdi Kadioglu's goal in the 53rd minute. Meanwhile, Kosovo staged a thrilling comeback against Slovakia, winning 4-3 after trailing 2-1 at halftime.
In Path D, Denmark showcased their strength with a commanding 4-0 victory over North Macedonia, highlighted by a brace from Gustav Isaksen. They will meet Czechia in the finals, who advanced after a tense penalty shootout against the Republic of Ireland.
The finals of the European playoffs are set for March 31. Additionally, Bolivia secured a spot in the new intercontinental competition by defeating Suriname 2-1, and they will face Iraq on April 1 for the final spot.
The FIFA World Cup, featuring 48 teams, is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the USA, Mexico, and Canada, with Mexico hosting the opening match against South Africa in Mexico City.
