Essential Tips for Mastering the Third Shot in Pickleball
Improving Your Third Shot Technique
James Broker, a professional pickleball player, has shared valuable advice for those aiming to enhance their third-shot skills. He emphasized a frequent error that can hinder players during rallies. In a recent post on his Instagram, Broker discussed the importance of positioning after serving, noting that many players tend to advance too far forward, which compromises their control over the third shot. He stated, "A common mistake I observe is that after serving and receiving the return, players stand too close to the net. It's essential to position yourself behind the baseline to effectively approach the third shot."
Broker illustrated how poor positioning can lead to hitting the third shot off balance, explaining, "I often find myself hitting that third shot from my back foot because I moved in too quickly after serving." He recommended that players should advance while executing a drop shot, which not only helps them gain a positional edge but also applies pressure on their opponents. He added, "By moving forward as you hit that drop shot, you can bypass the transition zone and put your opponent under pressure for their fourth shot."
Broker pointed out that this pressure can lead to mistakes from opponents, resulting in easier scoring chances. He remarked, "When they feel that pressure, you might get a pop-up, leading to many easy points from that third shot pressure."
