Collin Johns, a professional pickleball player, has introduced an innovative method for novices to enhance their skills through a variation known as 'skinny singles.' This approach allows beginners to practice without feeling overwhelmed. Johns expressed his enthusiasm for the sport, stating, 'What I appreciate about this game, particularly for newcomers, is its simplicity in learning.' He emphasized that players can quickly engage with various elements of the game, such as dinks and volleys, while cultivating a natural connection with the ball and paddle.
One significant hurdle for beginners is navigating the entire court. Johns remarked, 'Managing the full court can be quite chaotic,' which often restricts practice opportunities and hinders consistency. He pointed out that traditional full-court play does not adequately prepare players for doubles, which is the most popular format.
To tackle this issue, Johns advocates for 'skinny singles,' a modified game played on half the court. 'Skinny singles means playing on half the court,' he clarified, noting that the drill usually starts at the kitchen line to promote controlled rallies and improved touch. Players can initiate the game by tossing the ball into the kitchen area. 'You can keep score if you wish, but it’s not mandatory,' he added, highlighting the flexibility of this format. Once the rally commences, players can continue until a shot lands outside the designated area, which would result in losing that rally.
Johns believes this variation not only simplifies the game but also enhances the enjoyment for newcomers. 'Try this skinny singles variation to have more fun, especially if it’s your first time on the court,' he recommended. With its emphasis on repetition, control, and reduced court coverage, skinny singles provides a structured yet enjoyable introduction to pickleball, aligning with Johns’ philosophy of learning through play.
