England Faces Injury Setbacks Ahead of World Cup Knockout Match Against DR Congo
Injury Concerns for England Ahead of Crucial Match
New York [US], July 1: England's FIFA World Cup last-32 match against DR Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday will be without Reece James and Jarell Quansah due to injuries.
Quansah suffered an ankle injury during the team's final group-stage victory over Panama on Saturday, while James is dealing with a hamstring issue.
According to reports from a leading sports network, both players were absent from training sessions leading up to the knockout game.
In their absence, Tottenham's Djed Spence is anticipated to take over the right-back position. Spence has shown versatility throughout the tournament, having played various roles including a brief stint in the opening match against Croatia, 66 minutes at left-back against Ghana, and then switching to right-back during the win over Panama.
The right-back position has become increasingly problematic for manager Thomas Tuchel, especially after Tino Livramento from Newcastle withdrew from the squad shortly before the tournament due to a calf injury, prompting Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah to be called up as his replacement.
Despite these challenges, the remaining members of England's 26-man squad participated fully in training on Tuesday in preparation for the knockout match.
On Wednesday, Thomas Tuchel's team will face DR Congo, who are making their World Cup debut after 52 years. The Congolese team managed a draw against Portugal in the group stage and secured a comeback victory over Uzbekistan, setting the stage for an exciting knockout encounter.
