Building a New Generation of Pickleball Enthusiasts

The swift growth of pickleball around the globe is cultivating new grassroots communities dedicated to the sport. Initially a pastime for adults, it is now gaining traction among younger demographics, with schools and local organizations leveraging the game to promote fitness and social engagement.

On the Island, a local recreational program at Aterro do Cocotá is fostering interest in pickleball among children and families. Every Saturday evening, public courts near the Cocotá landfill host the 'Kids Recreational Project,' aimed at introducing kids aged 9 to 14 to the sport. The sessions, which run from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, are led by coach Hene Júnior and supported by a team of instructors.

This initiative utilizes multi-sport courts adjacent to a football field, focusing on making sports accessible to local youth. Organizers emphasize that the program is designed to instill discipline, teamwork, and healthier lifestyles while reducing reliance on screens and digital entertainment.

To encourage participation, the first month of classes is free, allowing children to explore the sport before committing. After this introductory period, those wishing to continue can enroll for a monthly fee of 50 reais, with all necessary equipment provided by the organizers.

Coach Hene Júnior, who remains an active competitor in pickleball, believes the sport can significantly impact younger generations due to its inclusive nature and social atmosphere. However, organizers face challenges, particularly with infrastructure; some floodlights are malfunctioning, complicating evening sessions, and the venue lacks proper pickleball court markings.

To address these issues, a crowdfunding campaign has been initiated to finance improvements, alongside efforts to gain support from the local sub-prefecture for enhanced facilities. The expansion of the children's program reflects the broader growth of pickleball in the region. Recreativo Insulano, the group behind this initiative, also conducts evening activities for adults and has organized public tournaments. Furthermore, local schools, such as Edel School, have recently incorporated pickleball into their extracurricular offerings, highlighting the sport's increasing appeal among youth.
