Effective Strategies to Counter Aggressive Pickleball Players
Mastering the Art of Defense Against Hard Hitters
James Broker, a professional pickleball athlete, has unveiled a straightforward yet powerful tactic to handle aggressive players known as 'bangers', who depend on strong midcourt drives. In a recent post on his Instagram, Broker highlighted that the secret to managing hard hitters is to capitalize on their poor shots rather than just responding to them. He stated, “I’m going to show you how to slow the game down when your opponents are just driving every ball.”
Broker pointed out that many players allow their opponents to maintain an aggressive stance because they do not take advantage of weak or rushed shots. He emphasized, “The reason why they’re getting away with driving every ball is you’re not punishing them for bad drives.” When facing a midcourt drive, players typically have ample time to seize control of the point. “Anytime someone’s driving from the midcourt, you should have enough time to punch down at the ball. That’s the key. You need to hit down on the ball,” he elaborated.
He cautioned that merely reacting to the speed of the shot can lead to a disadvantage. “If you’re reacting and popping up, then that ball’s going to sail and they’re going to have the easy put away. You need to be down,” Broker advised.
Broker also suggested a minor yet significant adjustment in grip technique. Instead of wrapping the thumb around the bottom of the paddle handle, he recommends positioning the thumb along the back. “One of the best ways that I do this is instead of holding my paddle with my thumb wrapped around the bottom, what I do is I put it up on the back. That helps me roll my wrist forward when I’m punching and that allows me to get down on it,” he explained.
He noted that keeping the thumb wrapped underneath can lead to unintentional lifts of the ball. “If I keep my thumb wrapped around, it’s too easy to pop the ball up,” he added. The main takeaway is that when facing aggressive drivers, control and technique are more crucial than sheer power. By blocking down and adjusting grip positioning, players can neutralize the pace, regain control of rallies, and transform defense into scoring opportunities.
