East Bengal FC Achieves Historic 7-0 Victory Over Mohammedan SC in Kolkata Derby
Historic Derby Win
In a remarkable display, East Bengal FC triumphed over Mohammedan Sporting Club with a staggering 7-0 scoreline during the Indian Super League 2025-26 at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Monday. This victory not only sets a record for the largest margin in their encounters but also ties the highest margin in ISL history, matching FC Goa's 7-0 win against Mumbai City FC in 2015.
Current Standings
Following this impressive win, East Bengal ascended to fourth place in the league standings, accumulating 11 points from six matches. In contrast, Mohammedan SC remains at the bottom, still seeking their first points after five matches. Anwar Ali earned the Player of the Match title for his outstanding performance, which included scoring two goals.
First Half Dominance
East Bengal started the match with intense pressure, which paid off in the sixth minute when Anwar Ali scored with a long-range left-footed shot that slipped past Mohammedan's goalkeeper, Padam Chettri, into the bottom-right corner, giving East Bengal a 1-0 lead.
The lead was doubled in the 14th minute when a foul by Mohammedan's Sajjad Hussain on Miguel Figueira resulted in a penalty. Youssef Ezzejjari confidently converted the penalty, making it 2-0.
East Bengal continued to dominate, with Edmund Lalrindika testing the Mohammedan keeper midway through the half. Mohammedan had a rare chance in the 29th minute, but Md Fardin's shot was easily saved by Prabhsukhan Gill.
The match tilted further in East Bengal's favor when Joseph Lalmuanawma of Mohammedan received a second yellow card, leading to his dismissal. Captain Saul Crespo converted the resulting penalty in the 38th minute, extending the lead to 3-0. East Bengal nearly scored again before halftime, hitting the crossbar, and went into the break with a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Second Half Onslaught
The second half mirrored the first, with East Bengal maintaining control. In the 54th minute, Ezzejjari scored his second penalty of the match, marking a unique occurrence of a team scoring three penalties in a single ISL match after Miguel Figueira was fouled in the box.
Despite being a man down, Mohammedan tried to respond, with Juwel Mazumder missing a close-range opportunity in the 68th minute. East Bengal, however, continued to create chances, with Lalhlansanga narrowly missing a header from an Anwar Ali cross.
The fifth goal came in the 75th minute when PV Vishnu scored from close range after a corner kick. Just four minutes later, Anwar Ali netted his second goal of the night with a composed finish from inside the box, assisted by Mahesh Naorem.
The scoring concluded deep into stoppage time when substitute Nandha Kumar scored in the sixth minute of added time, sealing the 7-0 victory and securing three points for East Bengal in this historic Kolkata derby.
