Exciting Comeback of the Durand Cup

Imphal (Manipur) [India], July 30: The 134th edition of the Durand Cup made a grand return to Imphal, the capital of Manipur, after a two-year break on Wednesday. The renowned Khuman Lampak Stadium was the venue for an eagerly awaited Group F match featuring local teams TRAU FC and NEROCA FC, sparking the region's enduring love for football.


Among the notable attendees were Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, and Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, Justice Kempaiah Somashekar.


Festivities kicked off an hour before the match, creating an electrifying atmosphere in the stadium. Fans enjoyed a thrilling combination of military exhibitions and cultural performances that showcased the rich traditions of Manipur alongside the pride of the Indian Armed Forces.


The cultural segment commenced with a flypast by Army Aviation helicopters, led by Lt Col Pushkar Choudhary, which carried both the National Flag and the Durand Cup flag. On the ground, the Indian Army Pipe Band set an energetic tone, followed by an impressive Krav Maga display by the Grenadier Regiment, as reported.


A captivating fusion performance by the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipuri Dance Academy featured a blend of Langdeng, Thang-Ta, Dhol-Cholom, Kabui Jagoi, Pung-Cholom, and Vasanata Raas, creating a stunning visual experience. This was succeeded by a thrilling Kalarippayattu demonstration by the 'Gallant Thambis' of the Madras Regiment.


Before the match began, the Chief Guest interacted with players and officials, officially inaugurating the Imphal leg of the Durand Cup 2025 with a ceremonial kick-off.


In the stands, stars from the Indian Women’s Football Team, including Dangmei Grace, N. Ratanbala Devi, Ph. Nirmala Devi, Th. Martina Devi, and Linda Kom Serto, who recently qualified for the AFC, engaged with fans by tossing signed footballs into the crowd, energizing young supporters and promoting the sport.


The half-time break featured lively performances from the Assam Rifles Symphony Band and local artist Ms. Rani Sharma and her band, enhancing the festive spirit.


The match concluded in a 1-1 draw, with Raj Singh scoring for TRAU in the 58th minute with a stunning long-range shot. NEROCA FC equalized with a remarkable flying header from Arunjacki just before the final whistle.


Joining TRAU FC and NEROCA FC in Group F are I-League side Real Kashmir FC and Indian Navy FT. Six matches are scheduled to take place at the Khuman Lampak Stadium, each anticipated to attract enthusiastic crowds in this football-loving city.
