Delhi Capitals Request Venue Change Amid Heavy Rain Forecast for IPL Clash
Delhi Capitals Seek Venue Change Due to Weather Concerns
As Mumbai braces for heavy rainfall and a yellow alert is in effect, Parth Jindal, co-owner of Delhi Capitals (DC), has officially requested the IPL to relocate the pivotal match against Mumbai Indians (MI) scheduled for Wednesday night. This encounter at Wankhede Stadium is crucial for playoff qualifications, but the impending weather could lead to a no-result.
On Tuesday, Jindal sent an email to the IPL, emphasizing the need for consistency in decision-making. He pointed to a recent match on May 23 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), which was shifted from Bengaluru to Lucknow due to similar weather issues.
"The forecast in Mumbai indicates heavy rains, and there is a significant chance that the game will be canceled.
Just as the RCB vs SRH match was moved for consistency and the league's interest, I request that tomorrow's game also be relocated, as we have been aware of the heavy rain forecast for the 21st in Mumbai for over six days."
If the match is washed out, both teams would receive one point each, potentially allowing MI to reach 15 points, which might be sufficient for playoff advancement. DC would then have 14 points but would still need to secure a victory against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their final league match. MI also faces PBKS in their concluding game, but the rain buffer provides them with a more favorable scenario.
Currently, MI holds the fourth position with 14 points from 12 matches, while DC is in fifth place with 13 points from the same number of games.
Previous Rain-Related Protests by KKR
Jindal's request follows a recent appeal from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore, who also contacted the IPL regarding rain-related decisions. Mysore expressed his concerns after KKR was eliminated due to a washed-out match against RCB on May 17, just before the league implemented a new 120-minute extension rule for rain-affected games.
“KKR is aggrieved,” Mysore remarked, noting that the rule change came too late to keep them in the playoff race.
As the competition intensifies and weather conditions threaten crucial matches, the IPL faces increasing pressure to ensure fairness. However, as of Wednesday morning, there has been no announcement regarding a venue change for the MI vs DC match.
