Delhi Capitals Miss IPL Playoffs for Fifth Straight Year Despite Final Match Victory

The Delhi Capitals have once again failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs, marking their fifth consecutive season without a playoff appearance. Despite ending their campaign on a high note with a 40-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders, coach Hemang Badani pointed out the team's lack of consistency as a major factor in their failure. With a record of seven wins and seven losses, the Capitals finished sixth in the standings. Badani emphasized the importance of playing consistently throughout the entire match, noting that even small margins can determine playoff qualification. The team's performance in their final match showcased their potential, but it wasn't enough to secure a spot in the playoffs.

DC Miss Playoffs for Fifth Consecutive Season

Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Hemang Badani acknowledged that the team has struggled to maintain 'consistent cricket' recently, leading to yet another failure to qualify for the playoffs in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Although the Axar Patel-led team concluded their season positively with a 40-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), this marks the fifth consecutive year that DC has not reached the playoffs.

Season Performance Overview

In the IPL 2026 standings, DC finished sixth, recording seven wins and seven losses across 14 matches. Their last playoff appearance was in the 2021 season.

'Lack of Consistency in 20 Overs'

During the post-match press conference following the KKR vs DC game, Hemang Badani expressed that the team's inability to play consistently throughout all 20 overs was a key factor in their playoff miss. He noted that last season, they narrowly missed out on qualification by just one point, emphasizing that winning one additional match could have secured their spot. 'You need to play 20 overs of consistent cricket, and I believe we haven't achieved that. Last year, we were just one point shy at 15 points. Winning one more game would have meant qualification,' he stated.

The Importance of Fine Margins

Badani highlighted that the difference between success and failure often comes down to small margins, stressing that every ball in the tournament counts. He urged the team to remain vigilant and fully committed throughout the matches, as they have not been performing consistently in crucial moments. 'It's about one game, and those small margins are what I'm referring to. You must be alert. In this tournament, every ball requires your full effort, and I think we are lacking in that area,' he remarked.

DC Concludes Season with Victory Over KKR

In their final league match, Delhi Capitals successfully defended a total of 204 runs against KKR. Batting first, the team scored 203/5, with KL Rahul contributing a brisk 60 runs, followed by 39 from skipper Axar Patel, and a late boost from David Miller and Ashutosh Sharma. KKR's bowlers struggled to control the scoring during the death overs despite sharing the wickets.

KKR started their innings steadily with Finn Allen and Ajinkya Rahane adding 43 runs, while Rahane and Manish Pandey maintained the momentum during the power play.

However, the match shifted when Kuldeep Yadav took two quick wickets, dismissing Rahane and Rinku Singh, followed by Axar Patel's wicket of Tejasvi Dahiya. Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi then wrapped up the lower order, bowling KKR out for 163 in 18.4 overs, thus securing a solid win for DC and ending their season on a high note.
