Delhi Capitals' Abishek Porel Aims for Higher Scores in IPL 2024
Setting Goals for the Upcoming IPL Season
As the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, Delhi Capitals' wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel expressed his ambition to transform his promising starts of 30-40 runs into substantial scores. During a pre-season media event in the national capital, Porel shared his thoughts.
Aiming for Bigger Scores
The left-handed batter from Bengal, who initially played as a lower-order hitter, transitioned to a more prominent role in the 2024 season, frequently opening the batting. In the previous season, he accumulated 301 runs over 13 innings, averaging 25.08 with a strike rate nearing 147, including one fifty. His team concluded the season in fifth place with seven victories, six defeats, and one match with no result, totaling 16 points. Despite scoring several runs in the 30s, he struggled to convert these into larger totals. Porel emphasized the importance of hard work, stating, "You have to work every day. Each day presents new challenges, and last year I often reached 30-40 runs. The focus now is to convert those starts, as I have done in domestic cricket, and carry that momentum into the IPL."
'Zabardast' Preparations and Stellar Form
Porel expressed satisfaction with his training, describing it as "zabardast" (amazing). His performance in the 2024 season was his best yet, where he scored 327 runs in 12 innings, averaging 32.70 with a strike rate of nearly 160, including two fifties and a top score of 65.
In the previous year, he participated in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT), scoring 241 runs in five matches at an impressive average of 60.25 and a strike rate of 126.17, featuring one century and one fifty, with a highest score of 106. Additionally, in the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), he made 225 runs in seven innings, averaging 32.14 with a strike rate exceeding 175, including two fifties.
On Versatile Role and KL Rahul Comparison
Porel noted the similarities between himself and KL Rahul, both being wicketkeeper-batters capable of batting in various positions and adapting quickly. Regarding his role in the team for the upcoming tournament and discussions with his senior teammate, he remarked, "As for opening with KL Rahul, we don't yet know the final combination. It is for the management to decide. I am ready and happy to deliver in any role I get to play."
'Ups and Downs are Part and Parcel'
Reflecting on the previous season's challenges, Porel maintained a positive outlook, stating that setbacks are "part and parcel" of the game and life. He believes that the current squad is capable of performing well, saying, "Part and parcel (their loss of momentum and failures last season). There are always ups and downs in cricket and life. There is no fun without it. The mistakes that happened last year will not be repeated this year. We will play good cricket with the squad we have," he concluded.
