Dale Steyn Analyzes Virat Kohli's Transformation Post-Test Retirement
Kohli's Evolution as a Batter
Dale Steyn, the former South African fast bowler, commented on the significant changes in Virat Kohli's mindset following his retirement from Test cricket. In a recent match, Kohli showcased his prowess by scoring an impressive 69 runs off just 38 balls, which included five sixes and an equal number of fours, leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to a six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Kohli's Enhanced Six-Hitting Ability
During an appearance on Star Sports, Steyn discussed Kohli's growth as a batsman. He noted, "Many players at Kohli's level aim to refine their game slightly. Kohli consistently seeks improvements each IPL season. His recent enhancement is his ability to hit sixes, which has notably increased over the last two seasons."
"As a batsman, it's crucial to identify which balls to target for sixes. Previously, Kohli had a fixed approach to certain shots. However, his mentality has shifted significantly since stepping away from Test cricket. He now possesses immense confidence, allowing him to execute aerial shots repeatedly, showcasing his exceptional talent," Steyn added.
SRH's Struggles in Defending Their Total
In the match, SRH managed to recover from a shaky start, finishing with a total of 201/9. Ishan Kishan played a pivotal role, scoring a remarkable 80 runs off 38 deliveries, while the middle order contributed to a competitive score. However, IPL newcomer Jacob Duffy made an early impact, taking three wickets and reducing SRH to 29/3. He ended with impressive figures of 3/22, complemented by Romario Shepherd's three wickets.
Steyn analyzed SRH's inability to defend their score, stating, "Ishan Kishan's innings was a joy to watch, as he effectively controlled the game and maintained an aggressive batting approach in the first half. However, in the latter stages, SRH's bowlers lacked a clear strategy. Defending high totals is challenging with their current bowling lineup."
"I was surprised that Nitish Kumar Reddy only bowled two overs during the Powerplay and didn't bowl again. There are several discussions needed between SRH's management and captain regarding resource utilization. Given their aggressive style, especially in Hyderabad, they need bowlers who can take wickets and apply pressure. Otherwise, defending scores over 200 will be a significant challenge for SRH with their current bowling attack. They must adopt smarter strategies and adhere to a plan, which they failed to do against RCB," he concluded.
