Gukesh's Remarkable Victory in Zagreb

Zagreb, Croatia - On July 4, reigning world champion D Gukesh achieved another stunning victory against world number one Magnus Carlsen during the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz tournament, extending his winning streak to five matches.

Unlike previous encounters, Carlsen displayed no visible frustration or dramatic reactions after making a critical mistake from a winning position. Gukesh's triumph positioned him as the sole leader with 10 points at the conclusion of the second day, while Carlsen lagged behind with six points. As the final games approach, Gukesh holds a two-point lead over his nearest competitor, Jan-Krzysztof Duda.

Last month, Gukesh had already stunned the chess world by defeating the former world champion in Round 6 of the Norway Chess tournament, showcasing his impressive form. In this match, Carlsen played with the white pieces, while Gukesh aimed to dominate with black.

Initially, Carlsen controlled the game, attempting to create opportunities against the young Indian grandmaster. However, the tide turned dramatically when Carlsen made a critical error by advancing his b pawn to b4. Gukesh capitalized on this mistake, taking command of the match.

As the clock ticked down to under 30 seconds for Carlsen, he recognized the inevitable outcome and chose to resign, shaking Gukesh's hand without much emotion or eye contact.

Former world champion Garry Kasparov, who provided commentary for the official stream, remarked, "Now we can question Magnus' dominance because this is not just his second loss to Gukesh; it's a convincing loss." Kasparov criticized Carlsen's decision to push his pawn to b4.

Reflecting on his victory, Gukesh expressed satisfaction in overcoming the match after initially misplaying a few moves, stating, "Beating Magnus is always special, and this gives a bit more confidence. I had a horrible opening."
