Croatia Secures Vital Win Against Panama

Toronto [Canada], June 24: Croatia achieved a significant 1-0 victory over Panama in their Group L match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Toronto Stadium on Tuesday (local time). This win is crucial for Croatia's World Cup journey, especially after their initial 4-2 loss to England in the tournament's opening match.

The game started cautiously, with Panama displaying a well-organized and physical midfield, making it difficult for Croatia to generate clear scoring opportunities. Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic struggled to find space as Panama's high press disrupted Croatia's passing game.

The first half's best opportunity came in the 23rd minute when Panama's Jose Luis Rodriguez connected with a cross, delivering a powerful header. However, Croatia's goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic made an exceptional save, tipping the ball onto the crossbar.

After halftime, Croatia showed improvement following tactical adjustments by coach Zlatko Dalic, who brought in Ante Budimir to bolster the attack. This change quickly paid off, as Croatia took the lead in the 54th minute. A well-executed play down the right flank saw Josip Stanisic provide a low cross, which Budimir converted from close range at the far post.

In response to falling behind, Panama intensified their efforts to equalize, creating several threatening situations. Nevertheless, Livakovic was in remarkable form, making crucial saves, including a strong stop from a close-range header during a period of sustained pressure from Panama.

Croatia had opportunities to increase their lead on counter-attacks but failed to secure a second goal. Despite late pressure from Panama, Croatia's defense held strong, ensuring they walked away with all three points.

This victory brings Croatia to three points in Group L, while England and Ghana are tied with four points, setting the stage for a critical final group-stage match as Croatia aims for qualification.
