Ronaldo's Remarkable Comeback

Houston: Following Portugal's impressive victory at the World Cup on Tuesday, Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a powerful message as the final whistle blew. He looked directly into the camera and declared, "I’m back."

Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments, netting two goals in Portugal's 5-0 triumph over Uzbekistan. This performance silenced critics who had pointed to his lackluster showing in the team's earlier 1-1 draw against Congo.

Despite being no stranger to criticism, the 41-year-old admitted that the recent negativity was challenging. He reflected, "It’s always like that. It doesn’t matter, because it’s been 23 years on the job. When things go well, ‘Cristiano is good,’ when things go bad, ‘Cristiano is a retired player, is old.’ It will always be like that. But we responded well today, me and my teammates, which is what we wanted."

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a right-footed shot following a cross from Joao Cancelo, celebrating with his teammates on the bench. He added another goal in the 39th minute, converting a pass from Bruno Fernandes to make it 3-0.

Uzbekistan's coach, Fabio Cannavaro, emphasized the need for defenders to stay close to Ronaldo in the box, stating, "If you give him one centimetre in the box, you are dead."

For his outstanding performance, Ronaldo was named man of the match, adding to his illustrious career accolades.

Portugal's coach, Roberto Martinez, praised Ronaldo's professionalism and composure amidst calls for him to be benched. "He’s a human being. He’s allowed to have emotions. What is impressive with him is the answer. Whatever he feels, the answer is to get back on the training ground and practice and work and demand from himself. That professionalism is what’s (led) to the longevity," Martinez noted.

With his two goals on Tuesday, Ronaldo became the second-oldest player to score in a World Cup, following Cameroon’s Roger Milla, who was 42 during the 1994 tournament.

This year, Ronaldo and Argentina's Lionel Messi made history as the only players to participate in six World Cups. Ronaldo's scoring journey began in 2006, with goals in 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022. While he shares the record for most tournaments with Messi, he stands alone in scoring in each edition, as Messi did not score in the 2010 World Cup.

Ronaldo's two goals against Uzbekistan brought his World Cup tally to 10, surpassing Eusebio's nine to become Portugal's all-time leading scorer in the tournament. Messi, in contrast, has 18 goals after a hat trick against Algeria and two more against Austria, making him the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.

This latest performance also extended Ronaldo's record to 145 international goals, and Tuesday's match marked the 230th of his international career, the most in history.

As this World Cup may be Ronaldo's last, he reflects on a career that includes winning the European Championship with Portugal in 2016 and five Champions League titles with Manchester United and Real Madrid.
