Cristian Romero Takes the Helm as Tottenham's New Captain
Romero Steps Up as Captain
London [UK], August 13: Tottenham Hotspur's head coach, Thomas Frank, has appointed Cristian Romero, the Argentinian defender, as the club's new captain following the departure of Son Heung-Min to LAFC in Major League Soccer this summer.
Son, who captained the team for the past two seasons, took over the role after Hugo Lloris, the club's long-standing goalkeeper, left North London in 2023. During Son's leadership, Tottenham broke a 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League last season.
Romero, a World Cup champion and two-time Copa America winner, previously served as vice-captain alongside James Maddison during the tenure of Frank's predecessor, Ange Postecoglou.
In a heartfelt message on X, Romero expressed, “Today marks the beginning of a new season for us, one that holds special significance. Being named the first captain of this remarkable club is a tremendous honor. I came here four years ago with a dream to etch my name in the club's history and to win a trophy, which I accomplished.”
He continued, “A new journey awaits us. A wonderful season is ahead, and together we will strive to relive the joy of that unforgettable day, May 21, 2025. I ask for unity through the highs and lows; together, we can achieve anything. Come on, you Spurs!”
Romero is now the third captain for Tottenham in the last decade, following Lloris and Son. The team is set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday, before kicking off their Premier League season against Burnley on Saturday.
Romero shared his excitement, stating, “I’m thrilled to be the first team captain of the club. It’s an amazing feeling. Today, I had a conversation with Thomas before training. I’ve spoken with him a lot leading up to the season. He’s a great coach, and I thanked him for this opportunity.”
He acknowledged the weight of the responsibility, saying, “I spoke with the players, and tomorrow is another significant night for the club, the players, and the fans. We need to savor this moment.”
