Zlatan Ibrahimovic Critiques Netherlands Coach After Penalty Shootout Loss to Morocco
Ibrahimovic's Strong Words for Koeman
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the former football superstar, expressed his disappointment with Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman following the team's penalty shootout defeat to Morocco. He stated that under Koeman's guidance, the Dutch squad has lost its essence, which left him feeling "angry."
Morocco secured their advancement to the Round of 16 by overcoming the Netherlands 3-2 in a tense penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 following extra time.
In a post-match interview with FOX, as reported by a Spanish media outlet, Ibrahimovic remarked, "This loss falls on Koeman. I couldn't recognize the Dutch national team. They played without the identity that defines them, which frustrates me. You should lose while staying true to your identity... that is who you are."
During the match, after a first half that saw limited clear chances, the Netherlands finally broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute with a goal from Cody Gakpo.
The Dutch team seemed poised to move forward until Morocco made a stunning comeback in stoppage time. In the 91st minute, Chemsdine Talbi sent a dangerous cross into the box, where Issa Diop leaped to head the ball past the goalkeeper, equalizing at 1-1 and quieting the Dutch fans.
This equalizer shifted the momentum towards Morocco, but neither team could find a winning goal during the additional 30 minutes of extra time, as both sides maintained solid defensive structures, leading to a penalty shootout.
The shootout was filled with tension, with both teams missing two penalties each. Morocco's goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, showcased his skills by saving a penalty from Crysencio Summerville.
With the score tied, Ismael Saibari stepped up to take the crucial penalty for Morocco, converting it calmly and securing a 3-2 victory in the shootout, igniting celebrations among Moroccan players and supporters.
