Young Striker Joya Shines with Winning Goal for India U17 Team
A Memorable Moment for Joya
New Delhi, March 18: The thrilling moment when 14-year-old Joya scored a volley that clinched a 3-2 victory for India against Myanmar in Yangon on March 14 will be etched in her memory forever.
Making her second international appearance for the Indian U17 women's national team, Joya came off the bench to net the crucial goal. Her immediate reaction was to call her biggest supporter—her mother—to share the joy of her achievement.
Joya's journey to this significant moment began in her hometown of Phagwara, Punjab, where she first discovered her love for football by watching local boys play.
Initially, her mother had reservations about her playing football, as it was uncommon for girls in their community. However, once she recognized Joya's passion for the sport, her support became unwavering, as Joya shared with the AIFF.
She expressed gratitude towards her coaches, Hardeep Singh, who introduced her to football in Phagwara, and Sandeep Singh, who trained her at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Academy in Hoshiarpur. Joya acknowledged that without their guidance, she wouldn't have reached this level.
Her first taste of competitive football came in 2024 during the U15 Khelo India Women’s Football League, which opened her eyes to the world of competitive play.
Following her impressive performances, Joya was invited to the national camp in Bengaluru earlier this year. Training with some of the best young talents under head coach Pamela Conti was a pivotal experience for her.
Joya noted, “It was my first national camp, and the training intensity was remarkable. Learning from a coach like Conti, who has experience in World Cups, and being with players from across the nation provided me with invaluable insights into international football and player preparation.”
Her hard work and preparation culminated in her impactful performance in Yangon. When she was called upon as a substitute late in the game, Joya focused on the coaching staff's instructions and made the most of her opportunity, scoring the decisive goal.
