Yashasvi Jaiswal Dropped from ODI Team After Century Performance

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dropped from the ODI team just a day after scoring a match-winning century against Afghanistan. His exclusion comes with the return of Virat Kohli, who was sidelined due to injury. Despite his impressive performance, Jaiswal's future in the ODI format appears uncertain as he remains only part of the Test team. Former cricketer AB de Villiers shared his thoughts on the situation, highlighting the challenges players face when main stars return. This article delves into Jaiswal's current standing and the implications for his career.

Yashasvi Jaiswal's Surprising Omission

Following his impressive century in the final ODI against Afghanistan, Yashasvi Jaiswal has been excluded from the ODI squad. His inclusion was initially due to Virat Kohli's hamstring injury, but with Kohli's return for the upcoming series against England, Jaiswal's spot has been lost. In his brief ODI career, Jaiswal has accumulated 285 runs across six innings, including two not-out centuries. Unfortunately, he appears to be out of contention for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with hopes of a longer opportunity only after the ICC event.

Former South African captain AB de Villiers commented on Jaiswal's exclusion during a discussion on his YouTube channel, expressing sympathy for the young player. He noted, "It's a tough situation for Jaiswal, who stepped in for Virat, scored a hundred, and now has to make way. While it's understandable for Kohli to return, it can feel harsh for players when the main stars come back. It makes sense for Virat to maintain his form from the IPL." The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has requested Kohli to pass a fitness test, which he recently undertook at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

Current Status of Yashasvi Jaiswal

Although Jaiswal is recognized as an all-format player, he is currently only part of the Test team. He was a member of the squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2024 but was rested during the home T20I series against England in early 2026. Abhishek Sharma took advantage of this opportunity and secured his position, while Jaiswal, along with Rishabh Pant, was not recalled. Neither player has participated in a T20I since 2024. Jaiswal's inconsistency in ODIs has been notable, as he was previously dropped after a match-winning century against South Africa, and now finds himself sidelined again despite another century performance.
