Amsterdam [Netherlands], August 13: Xavi Hernandez, the renowned former player of Spain and Barcelona, has been named the head coach of the Netherlands men's national football team, with his contract extending until the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment follows the Netherlands' unexpected exit in the round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where they were defeated by Morocco.

According to a statement from the KNVB, "Xavi Hernandez has been appointed as the new head coach of the Netherlands men's national team. The 46-year-old Spanish coach succeeds Ronald Koeman and has signed a contract that lasts until the 2030 FIFA World Cup."

In his first comments on the role, Xavi expressed his deep connection to Dutch football, referencing his formative years at the FC Barcelona academy, influenced by Dutch icons Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels.

He stated, "It is a tremendous honor to lead the Netherlands national team. My development at the FC Barcelona academy, shaped by figures like Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, gives me a unique bond with Dutch football. I consider myself, in a sense, a son of Dutch football. Coaches like Louis van Gaal, who oversaw my debut at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard have also significantly influenced my journey as both a player and a coach."

Xavi highlighted the Netherlands' rich football heritage and its appealing vision of attacking play based on possession, creativity, and passion. He emphasized, "Winning is always the primary goal, but I prefer to achieve it in a manner that reflects these characteristics and is enjoyable for fans.
