Will Young Named as Williamson's Replacement

New Zealand has officially announced that Will Young will replace Kane Williamson for the second Test against England. Following the first Test at Lord's, Williamson declared his retirement from all forms of international cricket, leaving a gap in the Blackcaps' batting lineup. Young, who has played 23 Test matches, has accumulated 1215 runs at an average of 31.97, including 11 half-centuries. His last Test appearance was in December 2025 in Christchurch against the West Indies. In his recent ten matches, he has recorded two List A centuries and one half-century in First-Class cricket.

NZC Confirms Young's Inclusion

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) stated, "Blackcaps and Central Stags batter Will Young has been called into the test squad in place of Kane Williamson for the remaining two test matches against England. Young is set to arrive in England on Sunday, June 14, and will join the team for training on Monday ahead of the second Test at the Oval, which begins on Wednesday, June 17." With a remarkable tally of 19,346 runs across all formats, including 48 centuries and six double-centuries, Williamson leaves behind a legacy as one of the greatest batsmen in New Zealand and international cricket history, making his replacement a challenging task.

Williamson Reflects on His Retirement

In his retirement statement, Williamson shared, "I’ve thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it’s become clear now is the right time. I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand. Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right, and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms."

New Zealand’s revised squad includes: Tom Latham (C), Tom Blundell (WK), Devon Conway, Zak Foulkes, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, Will Young, Dean Foxcroft, and Ben Sears (travelling reserve).
