Will IPL 2026 Mark the End of MS Dhoni's Career with CSK?
Is This the Final Season for Dhoni?
As the IPL 2026 season approaches, speculation arises about whether it will be MS Dhoni's final appearance as a player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The recent acquisition of Sanju Samson through a trade has led many to believe that CSK is preparing for a future without Dhoni, who may retire from the T20 league. It remains uncertain if Dhoni will step down after IPL 2026 or fulfill his contract until 2027. Given his current form, where he faces fewer deliveries, his retirement wouldn't come as a surprise. Additionally, he has been managing a knee issue since 2023, limiting his batting duration.
Former CSK player Robin Uthappa has made a bold statement regarding Dhoni's future, suggesting that IPL 2026 could be his last season. During a discussion on JioHostar, Uthappa expressed his belief that Dhoni might take on a mentor role while still playing. He stated, "I think you can see Dhoni being a little more hands-off. IPL 2026 is likely to be his last year in the yellow jersey. I see him playing more of a mentor-cum-player role this year. I don't see him batting at number seven. I see him batting at number eight. Knowing that he is on his way out, he wants to wean himself out. I think he will do that. Only then will we see the true potential of Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain.”
CSK faced challenges in IPL 2026, lacking a backup for Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Dhoni had to step back into a leadership role after Gaikwad was ruled out for the season. Unfortunately, CSK did not qualify for the playoffs.
CSK Retains MS Dhoni for Rs 4 Crore
Prior to the IPL 2025 mega-auction, CSK retained MS Dhoni for Rs 4 crore. Teams were permitted to retain uncapped players for the same amount before the auction. Since Dhoni last played an international match in July 2019, he was eligible for retention in the uncapped category. Similarly, Rajasthan Royals retained Sandeep Sharma for Rs 4 crore.
Robin Uthappa's Journey with CSK
Robin Uthappa, a member of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad, shared the field with Dhoni both in international matches and in the IPL. He joined CSK before IPL 2021 through a trade and had a two-year tenure with the team. Although Uthappa played only four matches for CSK in IPL 2021, he made significant contributions to their title victory, scoring 64 runs off 44 balls in the first qualifier against Delhi Capitals and 31 runs off just 15 balls in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders.
