West Indies Triumph Over India in Thrilling T20I Match
West Indies Clinch Victory in Second T20I
In a remarkable display of batting, West Indies secured a six-wicket victory against India in the second T20I of the five-match series held at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Friday. Captain Shai Hope led the charge with an impressive unbeaten 102 runs off just 45 balls, supported by Sherfane Rutherford's explosive 84 and Romario Shepherd's quick 34 not out.
India set a formidable target of 249 runs, bolstered by Sanju Samson's 82 runs from 41 balls, along with contributions from Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, and Tilak Varma. However, West Indies responded strongly, reaching 252 for 4 in just 18.3 overs, thus leveling the series at 1-1.
This victory marked West Indies' highest successful run chase in T20I history and the second-highest overall, trailing only South Africa's chase of 259 against West Indies in Centurion earlier this year.
India's bowling attack initially made an impact with Mayank Yadav taking two wickets in the first over, reducing West Indies to 9 for 2. However, Hope and Rovman Powell stabilized the innings, bringing the score to 58 for 2 in five overs. Powell contributed 24 runs off 13 balls before Yadav struck again.
Rutherford joined Hope and quickly accelerated the scoring, reaching 28 runs off 11 balls. Hope reached his half-century in just 24 balls, and the team crossed the 100-run mark in the ninth over.
Rutherford's aggressive batting continued as he scored 84 runs off 37 balls, hitting seven fours and seven sixes. Despite losing Rutherford to Kuldeep Yadav, Hope and Shepherd maintained the momentum, with Shepherd scoring 34 runs off 13 balls.
In the final overs, Hope sealed the match with two sixes in the 19th over, achieving his century in just 45 balls. He finished the innings not out at 102, with a total of six fours and nine sixes.
On the bowling front, Mayank Yadav was the standout for India, taking three wickets for 36 runs. Kuldeep Yadav and Arshdeep Singh struggled, conceding 53 and 45 runs respectively, while Axar Patel had a particularly tough outing, giving away 63 runs in 3.3 overs.
Earlier, after winning the toss, West Indies opted to bowl first. India started aggressively, scoring at over 12 runs per over. Despite losing opener Abhishek Sharma early, Samson's explosive innings kept India on track, as he reached his half-century in just 21 balls.
Ishan Kishan added 43 runs off 22 balls, and together with Samson, they built a solid partnership of 97 runs for the second wicket. However, Roston Chase's bowling brought West Indies back into contention, as he took three wickets for 24 runs.
Despite the setbacks, Iyer and Varma kept the scoring rate high, with Varma hitting three consecutive sixes in the final over to help India finish at 249 for 5.
