VK Vismaya Faces Two-Year Suspension for Doping Violation
VK Vismaya's Doping Suspension Explained
The uncertainty surrounding VK Vismaya, a gold medalist from the 2018 Asian Games in the 4x400m relay, has been resolved. The anti-doping disciplinary panel has imposed a two-year suspension on her, as confirmed by the latest updates from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).
Her suspension is effective from March 6, following a provisional ban after her sample tested positive for clomiphene.
Clomiphene, classified under S4 as a hormone and metabolic modulator, is prohibited because it acts as a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), often misused by athletes to mitigate the adverse effects of anabolic steroids or to help restore natural testosterone levels.
Vismaya's sample was taken during an out-of-competition test in August 2024 in Perumbavoor, near Kochi, leading to her provisional suspension in September. She has stated that she used the substance for fertility purposes.
In related news, sprinter N Shanmuga Srinivas and Chelimi Pratyusha have also received suspensions of four years and three years, respectively. Shanmuga's suspension will commence on March 6, 2025, while Pratyusha's begins on February 2, 2025. Both athletes were implicated in a case involving junior national athletics coach N Ramesh, who allegedly obstructed the doping sample collection process.
Ramesh, a Dronacharya awardee, faced a suspension for his actions, but last month, the anti-doping appeals panel overturned this decision. The panel, led by Geetanjali Sharma and including former hockey captain Rani Rampal and Dr. Rana Changappa, reached a 2-1 verdict to lift his suspension.
