Virat Kohli Urges Young Cricketers to Focus Beyond T20 Earnings
Kohli's Message to Aspiring Cricketers
Virat Kohli delivered a crucial message to emerging cricketers, emphasizing the importance of not becoming complacent due to the lucrative opportunities presented by T20 cricket. The renowned Indian cricketer urged young players to commit to a career that extends beyond just the shortest format of the game. At 37, Kohli highlighted that the true motivation for athletes should be to enjoy a two-decade-long career while earning respect and recognition within the cricketing community.
Kohli pointed out that the financial rewards from the IPL can lead players to a comfortable lifestyle, potentially diminishing their drive to endure the rigorous demands of the sport. He stated, "It's the drive. Many associate drive with financial gain these days. While it's significant, the allure of quick fame and wealth from scoring quick runs can create a false sense of security. Players might think, 'This is fantastic; I don't need to endure pressure for long.' They might just want to go out and hit the ball hard," during his address at the RCB Innovation Lab's Indian Sports Summit.
He further encouraged players to aspire for longevity in their careers, saying, "You can choose to play for 15-20 years, seeking recognition and respect from the cricketing world and your idols. This is an opportunity to fulfill." Kohli acknowledged the impressive power-hitting skills of today's young players but stressed the necessity of developing techniques to perform under challenging conditions and adapt to various match situations. He concluded, "If the pitch doesn't allow for boundaries, I should be capable of leading my team to victory. Understanding the game and preparing physically are essential for unlocking one's potential through mental choices."
