Kohli's Message to the Next Generation

Virat Kohli, a prominent figure in cricket, has called on younger players to resist the temptation of quick fame that the IPL provides. He emphasized the importance of dedication to the sport for long-term success and respect within the cricketing community.

Currently representing India only in the 50-over format, Kohli urged aspiring cricketers to cultivate their passion to excel across all formats of the game.

He stated, "It's all about the drive. Many associate drive with financial gain these days. While money is a significant factor, especially in a format that offers instant recognition and wealth through performances like scoring 40-50 runs off 20 balls, it can lead to a comfortable lifestyle," during the third edition of the RCB Innovation Lab's Indian Sports Summit.

Having previously dedicated himself to Test cricket, Kohli encouraged emerging players to embrace the challenging yet rewarding journey ahead.

He remarked, "Players might think, T20 cricket is fantastic; I don't have to endure pressure for long. I can just go out and hit the ball. Alternatively, they can choose to commit to a 15-20 year career, seeking recognition and respect from the cricketing world and their idols."

Kohli highlighted the need for a strong commitment, stating, "You must be driven to say, I will dedicate the next 10-15 years to this sport, knowing it will be tough, but I'm ready for it."

Despite his emphasis on commitment, Kohli acknowledged the impressive skills of contemporary cricketers, particularly their ability to hit sixes.

He noted, "It's thrilling to see many talented players who approach the game differently than I did. These athletes are far more advanced in power hitting and explosive play."

However, he pointed out that the true test of their abilities will emerge during the latter stages of the IPL when pitches become more challenging, requiring a strategic approach to batting.

Kohli explained, "The reality is, and I always remind people, let's see how things unfold by week six of the IPL. There will be matches where scoring 250 or 260 runs won't be feasible, and the game won't be all about aggressive batting every ball."

He added, "When chasing 175 or 180 runs on a difficult pitch with a couple of wickets down, how do you navigate that situation? At this point in the tournament, aside from a few players, you'll notice strike rates beginning to stabilize."

Kohli shared his strategy for overcoming tough phases, stating, "For me, it's about analyzing the game and figuring out how to handle different situations. This requires a solid foundation in the technical aspects of cricket, as adapting your batting style to meet the demands of the game necessitates the ability to play in various ways, not just one."

He concluded, "If the pitch doesn't allow for boundary hitting, I must find ways to guide my team to victory. This preparation involves physical readiness and making mental choices to unlock my potential."
