Virat Kohli Discusses Leadership and Performance at RCB Sports Summit
Insights from Virat Kohli on Elite Performance
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 19: Virat Kohli, the iconic player of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), shared his thoughts on leadership, the pressures of elite sports, and the mindset necessary for sustained high performance during the RCB Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit held on Tuesday.
In a revealing discussion titled 'Mind Over Everything: Virat Kohli on Peak Performance', Kohli candidly addressed the relentless pursuit of excellence that has defined his nearly two-decade-long career in international cricket, as highlighted in a statement from RCB.
When discussing his motivations as a player and his prowess in high-pressure situations, he remarked, “I’m wired to seek more responsibility and challenges. That’s when I perform at my best.”
Kohli emphasized the importance of finding a purpose beyond individual achievements, explaining how leadership roles have driven him to excel. “When you focus on a greater cause, it allows you to perform beyond your perceived limits,” he stated.
He reminisced about his experiences with Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathore while playing for the Indian Cricket Team, expressing gratitude for their support during challenging times. “I had a wonderful phase, and I always thank them for their care, which motivated me to play for them. They understood my feelings and provided mental support, allowing me to enjoy cricket again,” Kohli shared.
On his commitment to fitness, Kohli reframed his rigorous routine as a process of 'refinement' rather than a 'sacrifice', highlighting the significance of discipline and consistency in professional sports.
He conveyed that representing India is a responsibility that should be viewed as a standard expectation, contributing to a robust sporting culture. “I don’t see it as a sacrifice; it’s about being honest with the opportunity. Many aspire to play for India, and this should be the norm, not something extraordinary,” he explained.
Kohli also reflected on the broader impact athletes can have beyond their statistics, stating, “For me, impact is about inspiring belief. If people can draw motivation from my journey and discipline, that’s incredibly fulfilling.”
The summit also included discussions on the commercial growth of the IPL and WPL, India's Olympic aspirations, and improvements to fan experiences at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Notable speakers included Hari Ranjan Rao, IAS, Secretary of the Department of Sports, Government of India, Seemant Kumar Singh, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Bangalore City, and RCB officials who provided insights into the evolving landscape of Indian sports, infrastructure, governance, and long-term investments in sporting ecosystems.
