Tributes Pour in for Amanpreet Singh Gill

Chandigarh, India - On May 7, renowned Indian cricketer Virat Kohli expressed his sorrow over the passing of Amanpreet Singh Gill, a former pacer for Punjab and India’s Under-19 team, who died at the age of 36 in Chandigarh.

Gill, who played for Punjab in domestic cricket, passed away on Wednesday, although the specific circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

Kohli, who shared the field with Gill during their Under-19 days, took to X to share his condolences. He wrote, “I am shocked and saddened to learn about Amanpreet Gill’s passing. Sending prayers and strength to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti.”

The cause of Gill's death has not yet been disclosed.

Between 2006 and 2008, Gill participated in six first-class matches for Punjab, claiming 11 wickets throughout his domestic career. As a right-arm medium pacer, he was seen as a promising player in Punjab cricket and was part of India’s youth teams during tours to England, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka in 2007.

During that time, he played several youth one-day internationals and a three-day youth 'Test' for India, although he was not selected for the Kohli-led squad that triumphed in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia.

Gill was also involved in the Indian Premier League, having been part of the Punjab Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, during the tournament's inaugural season in 2008.

Later in his career, Gill remained connected to Punjab cricket by serving on the senior selection committee.

In a gesture of respect, players from Punjab Kings donned black armbands during their IPL match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday evening.

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also shared his condolences on X, stating, “I am deeply saddened to hear about Amanpreet Singh Gill’s passing. We shared the dressing room in our early days; he was a quiet, hardworking cricketer who loved the game. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace. Om Shanti.”

The Punjab Cricket Association also released an official statement expressing their sorrow over Gill’s death. They stated, “The Punjab Cricket Association deeply mourns the sad demise of Amanpreet Singh Gill, former Punjab cricketer and member of the senior selection committee.
