A Dramatic Return to the Mat

The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as Vinesh Phogat made her competitive return on Saturday, following the disappointment of her disqualification at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The heavy presence of security personnel underscored the significance of the moment as all eyes were on her during the Asian Games selection trials.

This marked Vinesh's first appearance on the mat since her Olympic setback, as she aimed to reclaim her spot on the national team. The event quickly escalated into a dramatic scene, with tensions flaring between her supporters and officials from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Every point scored by Vinesh was met with enthusiastic cheers from her dedicated fans, while any unfavorable calls sparked protests from the crowd. The intensity peaked during her quarterfinal match in the 53kg category against the formidable Nishu Kumari, where Vinesh's camp believed she had achieved a pinfall victory. Her husband, Sombir Rathee, rushed onto the mat to contest the referee's decision, highlighting the emotional stakes of her comeback.

The excitement reached a boiling point when Vinesh ultimately secured victory in that hard-fought match, prompting her supporters to celebrate exuberantly in front of WFI officials. The situation became so heated that WFI president Sanjay Singh had to intervene, urging the crowd to maintain decorum, while police were called in to manage the escalating tensions.

Security had been heightened outside the venue since early morning, reflecting the sensitivity surrounding Vinesh's return after a prolonged period of legal and administrative challenges with the federation. Additionally, her position as a sitting MLA from Haryana necessitated further security measures.

The trials unfolded under extraordinary circumstances, as the Supreme Court granted Vinesh permission to compete, resolving months of uncertainty regarding her comeback. For many spectators, the unfolding drama surrounding Vinesh overshadowed the competition itself.

Every action she took drew attention, with fans straining to catch a glimpse, while officials remained vigilant amid the charged environment. Nearly 16 months after her most challenging moment in Paris, Vinesh's return transformed the Asian Games trials into a significant event beyond a mere selection process.

After losing in the semifinals to Meenakshi Goyat, Vinesh left the mat declaring, "I will come back." WFI President Sanjay Singh interpreted this as a direct challenge, stating, "She used very rough language against me. I can’t share the exact words, but she said, ‘I will see you, and I will return.’ The WFI had previously issued her a show-cause notice for indiscipline, and she continues to exhibit such behavior."

Singh also expressed concern over the large number of Vinesh's supporters, questioning how they managed to gather despite requests for limited attendance to maintain order. He noted, "It was evident that Vinesh brought a significant number of supporters. The situation nearly escalated into confrontation several times. Had WFI officials not exercised restraint, it could have turned much worse."

Additionally, Vinesh's husband Sombir was reported to have verbally confronted WFI secretary general (acting) Jai Prakash, which Singh deemed unacceptable.
