Vinesh Phogat Secures Spot in 53kg Category for Asian Games Trials
Vinesh Phogat's Participation in Asian Games Trials Confirmed
On Saturday, Vinesh Phogat, a former world championships medallist, received approval to compete in the women's 53kg category at the Asian Games selection trials. This decision came after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) reversed its previous ruling that limited her to the 50kg division.
The situation took a dramatic turn during the official weigh-in when Vinesh was informed she could only participate in the 50kg category, based on her recent competitions, including the Paris Olympics.
Vinesh voiced her objections, claiming the federation was unfairly restricting her choice of competition category.
Witnesses at the venue reported that the issue escalated until WFI president Sanjay Singh intervened, allowing Vinesh to compete in the 53kg trials as well.
Sanjay Singh stated, “We allowed her after she raised concerns and requested to weigh in.” He emphasized that the federation does not wish to discriminate against any athlete.
Vinesh weighed in at 53.9kg and was subsequently placed in the 53kg draw, setting the stage for a competitive matchup against established wrestler Antim Panghal and the emerging talent Meenakshi Goyat.
In a brief media interaction, Vinesh expressed her commitment, saying, “I am here for at least two years.”
This decision marked a significant shift for the WFI, which had previously insisted that Vinesh would only be considered for the 50kg category due to her recent competition history.
The controversy surrounding this issue intensified after the Delhi High Court instructed the WFI to recognize Vinesh as an “iconic player” and allow her participation in the trials.
Vinesh has a history of competing in various weight classes, including 53kg, and was eager to participate in this category for the trials.
The winner of these trials will earn the opportunity to represent India at the upcoming Asian Games.
The WFI's decision to include Vinesh in the 53kg draw resolved hours of uncertainty and ensured that one of India's most accomplished female wrestlers remains in the running for an Asian Games spot.
