Vikas Kohli Critiques Team India's Management Amidst Test Struggles
Vikas Kohli's Concerns Over Team India's Performance
In New Delhi, Vikas Kohli, the elder sibling of cricket star Virat Kohli, has expressed his discontent with the current management of Team India as they face challenges in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. Following a narrow defeat in the first Test by 30 runs, India finds itself in a precarious position at 27-2, needing an improbable 522 runs to secure a win and equalize the series.
In a recent post on Threads, Vikas appeared to criticize the recent changes made by the management, implying that unnecessary alterations have disrupted a previously successful system in Test cricket. Although he did not directly name Team India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, his comments seemed to hint at the coach's influence and the shift in strategy since his appointment.
Vikas Kohli remarked, "There was a time we played to win even in overseas conditions... Now we are playing to save the match... even in India. This is what happens when you try to interfere and change things that were not broken."
The current management team includes coach Gambhir, BCCI selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Under Gambhir's leadership, India's Test performance has seen a decline, with more losses than wins, including an unexpected series of defeats at home. The batting lineup has struggled, with the top six averaging below 30, and the team frequently failing to score over 300 runs, a stark contrast to their previous consistency. This downturn has coincided with the retirements of key players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who were instrumental in India's batting for over a decade.
Last year, India faced a 3-0 home series defeat against New Zealand, followed by a 3-1 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which also resulted in missing out on the World Test Championship final.
Currently, in the two-Test series against South Africa, India has already lost the first match and is on the verge of another home series whitewash.
