On May 22, Shankar took to social media to announce his retirement from domestic cricket and the IPL, expressing his desire to explore opportunities in overseas leagues. He had gone unsold during the 2026 IPL mega auction, with his last appearance in the league being in 2025 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Since the 2019 World Cup, he has not represented India. In his heartfelt message, Shankar stated, "Cricket is my life. I started playing at the age of 10, and after 25 years, I feel grateful to have played at every level. Representing my country has been one of my proudest moments. I have decided to retire from domestic cricket and the IPL to pursue new opportunities. Thank you for allowing me to do what I love. I am eternally grateful." For context, Indian players must retire from all forms of Indian cricket to participate in overseas T20 leagues.
