Veer Chotrani's Exit Ends India's Run at World Squash Championships

Giza [Egypt], May 11: The World Squash Championships in Giza, Egypt, saw the end of India's campaign as Veer Chotrani faced a defeat in the second round against the top-ranked player, Mostafa Asal. Chotrani, who holds the 45th position in global rankings, lost decisively with scores of 11-5, 11-2, and 11-4.
The 24-year-old athlete was among four Indian squash players who advanced to the second round. He had previously secured his spot by defeating fellow Indian and World Cup champion Abhay Singh in a thrilling match that ended 3-2.
In the opening round, Velavan Senthilkumar and Ramit Tandon were unable to progress further. Senthilkumar, ranked 50th, was eliminated by France's sixth seed and current world No. 5, Victor Crouin, with a score of 3-0. Meanwhile, Tandon, who is ranked 40th, lost to Egypt's Kareem El Torkey with a score of 3-1.
Last year, India's performance at the World Squash Championships also fell short, with players like Anahat Singh, Veer Chotrani, Abhay Singh, and Ramit Tandon exiting in the second round, while Velavan Senthilkumar was knocked out in the first round.
This year, India's women squash players, including rising star Anahat Singh, did not participate. Notably, India has yet to secure a medal in singles events at the World Championships.
Squash is anticipated to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
