As he trains with the national team ahead of the T20I series against Ireland, the cricketing world watches closely. With Shreyas Iyer stepping in as captain after a surprising shake-up in leadership, this series marks a pivotal moment for Indian cricket. Will Sooryavanshi earn his first cap? Discover the details of this exciting new chapter in India's cricketing journey.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's First Practice with the National Team

On the eve of India's tour to the UK, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi took part in his inaugural practice session with the national squad. He stands on the brink of becoming the youngest player to represent India in international cricket. As preparations ramp up for the Ireland series, Sooryavanshi trained alongside his teammates in Belfast. A video released by the official broadcaster showcased him sprinting with captain Shreyas Iyer, engaging in football drills, and receiving valuable advice from Ishan Kishan, who made his international debut in 2021.

There is a strong possibility that Sooryavanshi will earn his first T20I cap in the opening match of the series. As an opening batsman, one of the current openers will need to be rested or dropped. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson were the openers for India during the latter stages of the 2026 T20 World Cup, and since then, the reigning champions have not played a T20I. Kishan is expected to maintain his position at number 3, while captain Shreyas Iyer may bat at number 4.

A New Chapter in India's T20I Cricket

Start of a New Era

The upcoming T20I series against Ireland signifies the beginning of a new chapter in India's T20I cricket. In a surprising move, selectors decided to remove Suryakumar Yadav from the captaincy, despite his leadership leading the team to victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup. His recent struggles with the bat also resulted in his exclusion from the squad. Shreyas Iyer has stepped in as the new captain, having not played a T20I since December 2023.

Iyer's impressive captaincy record in the IPL, where he has led three different teams (Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders) to the finals, earned him this opportunity. Notably, he guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title. Additionally, Iyer led Mumbai to victory in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and previously won the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2018-19 against Gautam Gambhir's Delhi.
