Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Controversial Clash After Super Over Defeat
Post-Match Tensions Erupt
Young batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi found himself embroiled in controversy following a heated exchange with players from Sri Lanka A after India's narrow Super Over loss in the ongoing tri-nation series held in Dambulla.
The incident unfolded just after Sri Lanka A narrowly defeated India A in a nail-biting finish. Footage captured on television revealed a visibly upset Sooryavanshi in a verbal confrontation with Sri Lankan bowler Kugathas Mathulan, which quickly escalated into a brief physical scuffle. Teammates and officials promptly stepped in to separate the two players.
Sources indicate that the 15-year-old opener for India A was making his way off the field when a comment from a Sri Lankan player sparked the altercation. Some reports allege that Mathulan provoked Sooryavanshi by saying, 'this is not IPL,' which led to the young player reacting with anger.
At this point, the claim regarding the 'This is not IPL' remark remains unverified.
The situation intensified when Sooryavanshi seemed to push Sri Lanka A's Vishen Halambage, who intervened during the dispute, before senior players managed to calm things down.
This incident capped off a dramatic evening already filled with controversy. The match concluded in a tie, with both teams scoring 265 runs, necessitating a Super Over. However, confusion arose regarding the execution of the tie-breaker due to diminishing light, resulting in prolonged discussions between India A's captain Tilak Varma and the umpires. Ultimately, Sri Lanka A scored 16 runs in the Super Over and successfully defended the target to claim victory.
As of now, no official disciplinary measures have been announced, but the incident may be examined under the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses inappropriate physical interactions and unsportsmanlike conduct.
The footage of the altercation has since gained traction on social media, overshadowing what was otherwise an exhilarating match between the two teams.
