India's T20I Clash with Ireland: Spotlight on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

All attention will be directed towards Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as India prepares to face Ireland in the opening T20I of their two-match series in Belfast on Friday, June 26. Sooryavanshi earned his spot in the T20I squad after an impressive performance in IPL 2026, where he amassed 776 runs across 16 matches, including 72 sixes and 63 fours, with one century to his name. Despite his remarkable form, the Indian team has retained most of its T20 World Cup-winning lineup, which diminishes the likelihood of Sooryavanshi making his debut.

In anticipation of the first T20I against Ireland, commentator Aakash Chopra has shared his predicted playing XI, notably excluding Sooryavanshi. He has opted to keep the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, with Ishan Kishan slated to bat at number three, followed by Shreyas Iyer. The all-rounder positions are filled by Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, and Harshit Rana, while Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna are chosen as the pace bowlers, with Ravi Bishnoi as the only frontline spinner.

Will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Make His Debut?

During a media interaction prior to the first T20I, India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak indicated that Sooryavanshi may have to wait for his debut. He emphasized that it would not be fair to bench an in-form player just to provide Sooryavanshi with a chance. Kotak stated, "I am confident he will receive his opportunities. It wouldn't be right to drop someone who is currently performing well. The decision ultimately lies with the team management regarding our strategy for this match. It's a delicate balance between giving someone a chance and being unfair to another player," he remarked.

The two T20I matches between India and Ireland are set for June 26 and 28. After this series, the Indian team will head to England for a series of five T20Is and three ODIs.
