Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Faces Unique Challenge on England Tour
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Historic Tour
During his inaugural tour as a member of the Indian cricket team, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will encounter a distinctive situation. He will not have access to the Indian dressing room and will instead utilize a separate changing area throughout the five-match T20I series against England, scheduled from July 1 to 11. Sooryavanshi is anticipated to make his debut for India in the two-match series against Ireland on June 26 and 28, prior to the team's arrival in England. The 15-year-old cricketer earned his first call-up to the national squad following impressive performances in the 2026 IPL and the U-19 World Cup earlier this year.
Separate Changing Room for Sooryavanshi
Despite being only 15, Sooryavanshi has proven his capability to compete at the international level. However, he will be required to use a separate changing room at all venues in England, as reported by The Guardian. This measure aligns with the regulations set forth by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the England Cricket Board (ECB), which include safeguarding policies for young players. According to these rules, players under 16 are prohibited from using adult changing facilities. The restrictions will apply only when Sooryavanshi needs to change before and after matches, but he will be permitted to enter the dressing room during games and participate in team discussions.
"This is an ICC event, and their safeguarding protocols are in effect, as they hold jurisdiction. Any safeguarding issues that arise during the event may be managed by the ICC. Furthermore, the ECB's Safe Hands policy is always in effect. The Cricket Regulator is coordinating with the Team Liaison Officer (TLO) for the Indian team to discuss the player's needs and expectations while in the UK. Each County Safeguarding Officer at the respective cricket venues is also collaborating with the TLO to ensure that venue protocols and arrangements, particularly regarding changing room environments, are understood and followed. This process involves conducting safeguarding risk assessments," stated an ECB representative, as reported by The Guardian.
This practice is standard in English sports; for instance, Arsenal's Max Dowman experienced similar arrangements until he turned 16 in December of the previous year. However, such regulations are not enforced in Indian sports or the IPL, allowing Sooryavanshi to share the Rajasthan Royals (RR) dressing room like any other player. The same applied when he played for 'India A.' The first match of the five-match series is set to occur on June 1 at Chester-le-Street, followed by matches in Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol, and Southampton. Sooryavanshi is on track to make history during the UK tour, potentially becoming the youngest cricketer to represent India, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's record of 16 years and 205 days, and the first player to compete for the national team in any format before reaching 16 years of age.
