Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Faces Controversy After Heated Clash in Tri-Nation Series
Tensions Rise After India A's Loss
Emerging talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has found himself in a challenging situation following a heated confrontation during the tri-nation series. Intended as a preparatory event for the upcoming tour to Ireland, the series took a turn when Sri Lanka A triumphed over India A in a Super Over on Tuesday. Following the match, Sooryavanshi engaged in a fierce dispute with an opposing player, which escalated to a minor physical clash. The incident unfolded after an exhilarating match in Dambulla, where Sri Lanka's Vishen Halambage and India's Sooryavanshi exchanged words. As tensions flared, Sri Lanka A's wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella stepped in to separate the players and ease the situation. It remains to be seen whether match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash will impose any formal penalties or merely issue a warning to those involved.
ICC Regulations on Player Conduct
According to Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, any form of inappropriate physical contact during an international match is strictly prohibited. This includes actions such as deliberately or recklessly colliding with another player or umpire. When evaluating the severity of such breaches, several factors are considered, including the context of the incident, the force of the contact, any injuries sustained, and the nature of the contact itself.
Sri Lanka A emerged victorious against India A in the Super Over. After the match ended in a tie following 50 overs, a Super Over was required to determine the winner. Sri Lanka A managed to score 16 runs in the Super Over, putting India A under pressure. In response, India A could only muster nine runs, with debutant pacer Kugathas Mathulan delivering a composed performance that thwarted Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge, securing the win for the home side.
Earlier in the competition, India A made a remarkable comeback, with Suryansh Shedge and Vipraj Nigam forming a crucial 104-run partnership for the eighth wicket when the team was struggling at 143/7. This partnership propelled India A to a total of 265, setting the stage for a thrilling finish. Sadeera Samarawickrama led Sri Lanka A with a steady 93 runs, ensuring the hosts maintained control throughout the chase. However, a brilliant final over from Arshad Khan allowed India A to stage a late comeback, bringing the match to a nail-biting conclusion.
Ultimately, Sri Lanka A's victory in the Super Over earned them two points, significantly boosting their chances of reaching the final. This defeat marks India A's second loss in three matches, following a rain-affected game against Afghanistan where they fell short by four runs using the DLS method. The team, under the captaincy of Tilak Varma, had previously secured a win against the same Sri Lanka A side in a low-scoring thriller to kick off their campaign.
