U.S. Secretary Expresses Relief Over Iran's Departure

In a recent statement, Markwayne Mullin, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, expressed his satisfaction following Iran's exit from the FIFA World Cup. He noted that he felt a sense of joy when the Iranian team left the United States after their visas were revoked.

Iran's involvement in the World Cup had been uncertain for several months, particularly after airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel targeted the nation in February.

Mullin shared his feelings, stating, "I was thrilled when we managed to revoke their visas and they departed from U.S. soil. I might have even celebrated with a song or a little dance," as reported by a sports media outlet.

The geopolitical climate surrounding the FIFA World Cup 2026, which is co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico, added to the complexities of Iran's participation.

Prior to the tournament, Iran relocated their training camp from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico, due to uncertainties regarding travel and entry into the U.S.

During the World Cup, Iran played three group-stage matches, ending their campaign with draws in all, which placed them third in Group G behind Belgium and Egypt, thus failing to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

In their final group match against Egypt, Mahmoud Sabre opened the scoring after a rebound from Mohamed Salah's shot, but Ramin Rezaeian equalized for Iran after Mehdi Taremi's penalty was saved. Despite Rezaeian being named Player of the Match, Iran's hopes for a win were dashed when a late goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR check.
