Day One Highlights of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025

New Delhi [India] - November 27: The opening day of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 showcased a remarkable performance by Gujarat's captain Urvil Patel, who scored a blistering century. Alongside him, Ajinkya Rahane and wicketkeeper Sanju Samson also made significant contributions.


In a Group C match against Services, Gujarat successfully chased down a target of 183 runs, bolstered by Gaurav Kochar's impressive 60 runs off 37 balls. Urvil, who joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as an injury replacement last IPL season, smashed an astonishing 119 runs off just 37 balls, hitting 12 fours and 10 sixes. Aarya Desai also contributed with a solid 60 runs off 35 balls. Gujarat achieved the target with eight wickets remaining and 45 balls to spare, with Urvil's 31-ball century marking the second-fastest by an Indian, following his own record of 28 balls set last year.


In another Group A encounter, Railways set a total of 158/5, with Ashutosh Sharma scoring 61 runs off 30 balls. Mumbai, however, chased down the target comfortably, thanks to Rahane's 62 runs off 33 balls and Suryakumar Yadav's 47 runs off 30 balls, completing the chase in just 15.5 overs with seven wickets in hand.


Kerala also made headlines in Group A, as Rohan Kunnummal's explosive 121 runs off 60 balls and Samson's 51 runs off 41 balls led them to a successful chase of 176 runs against Odisha without losing a wicket, finishing with 21 balls to spare.


In the Group C match between Puducherry and Haryana, Haryana fell just five runs short of their target of 202 runs, despite notable performances from Arsh Ranga (90 runs off 47 balls) and Yashvardhan Dalal (52 runs off 31 balls). Puducherry managed to score 201/9, with Pugazhendi Akash's 60 runs off 23 balls being the highlight.


Baroda faced Bengal in another thrilling Group C match, where Baroda posted 181/8, led by Bhanu Pania's unbeaten 53 runs off 27 balls. Bengal's chase was successful, with skipper Abishek Porel scoring 50 runs off 24 balls, securing the win with six wickets and 17 balls remaining.


In a Group C match, Punjab Kings (PBKS) triumphed over Himachal Pradesh, with Harpreet Brar's impressive bowling performance (2/14) helping restrict Himachal to 147/8. Anmolpreet Singh's 43 runs off 27 balls were crucial in Punjab's successful chase, finishing in 13.5 overs with five wickets in hand.


In Group B, Bihar's Vaibhav Suryavanshi struggled, as Chandigarh chased down their total of 158 runs in 18.4 overs, with U19 World Cup star Raj Angad Bawa contributing significantly with both bat and ball.


Maharashtra faced a tough defeat against Jammu and Kashmir, being bowled out for 130 runs. Auqib Nabi's bowling (3/28) was instrumental in J&K's victory.


UP secured a six-wicket win over Goa, with Goa scoring 172/9, highlighted by Abhinav Tejrana's explosive 72 runs. Shivam Mavi and Bhuvneshwar Kumar excelled with the ball for UP, while Aryan Juyal's unbeaten 93 runs led UP to victory in 18.4 overs.


In Group D, Delhi was defeated by Jharkhand, scoring 132 runs. Jharkhand's Kumar Kushagra and Ishan Kishan led their successful chase, finishing with seven wickets in hand.


Uttarakhand's rising star Ravichandran Smaran also shone in another Group D match, scoring 67 runs off 41 balls to help Karnataka chase down 198 runs with five wickets remaining.
