Tulika Maan Faces Suspension Ahead of Commonwealth Games Due to Doping Violations

Tulika Maan's Commonwealth Games Participation in Jeopardy

Tulika Maan, the silver medalist from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, will not be able to defend her title. The 27-year-old judoka has received a notice of charge from the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) due to three failures to report her whereabouts.

Scheduled to compete in the women’s +78kg division, Tulika has hurried to the NADA office to explain her situation. However, it appears unlikely that she will be permitted to join the team for the upcoming Glasgow Games.

She is the second judoka to face issues under anti-doping regulations, following Arun Kumar. Arun, who was training in Paris for the Games, underwent testing twice in Bellary, Karnataka, on June 8 and July 3, both of which revealed the presence of anabolic steroids mestanolone and stanozolol.

Reports indicate that Tulika failed to update her whereabouts in the Anti-Doping Administration and Management System (ADAMS) three times over the past year. Athletes in the registered testing pool (RTP) are required to regularly update their location information, specifying dates and times for the next three months. Any changes in their whereabouts must also be promptly updated in ADAMS.

According to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) code, three failures to report whereabouts, including missed tests, within a 12-month timeframe constitutes an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV). This violation can lead to a maximum suspension of two years as per article 2.4 of the anti-doping regulations.

Tulika has two choices: she can either challenge the charge or accept the suspension.

The president of the Judo Federation of India (JFI) confirmed the situation, stating that it is likely her name will be withdrawn from the 2026 Commonwealth Games. "She has received a notice for three whereabouts failures. While she is attempting to resolve this, it will be challenging to send her under these circumstances. We will likely have to withdraw her from the Games," Kumar informed a media outlet on Friday.
