Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], September 8: The Global Chess League (GCL) witnessed a significant shake-up as the two-time champions, Triveni Continental Kings, managed to upset the leading Alpine APL Pipers, creating a competitive atmosphere at the halfway point of the tournament. This unexpected victory came as the Continental Kings, who had previously struggled with only one win from four matches, triumphed with a score of 10-4. Meanwhile, the CheQ Mumba Masters continued their strong performance, defeating FYERS American Gambits 11-6.

In a match filled with suspense, the Ganges Grandmasters achieved a remarkable win against PBG Alaskan Knights, finishing with a score of 12-8, marking one of the most thrilling encounters of the competition thus far.

As the tournament stands, both Alpine APL Pipers and CheQ Mumba Masters have accumulated nine match points and 47 game points each, but the Pipers retain the top position due to their earlier victory over the Masters.

The day began with the Ganges Grandmasters facing off against PBG Alaskan Knights, setting the stage for an exhilarating Day 4 at the GCL, a collaborative effort between Tech Mahindra and FIDE. This match was particularly notable as it was the first in which all six boards produced results, culminating in a dramatic finish.

In a nail-biting moment, Abhimanyu Mishra, making his GCL debut with the Alaskan Knights, found himself in a winning position against Leon Luke Mendonca. However, with time running out, Mishra failed to legally complete a crucial move while promoting his pawn to a queen, leading to a time loss that allowed Mendonca to secure victory for the Ganges Grandmasters.

On the icon board, Ian Nepomniachtchi swiftly defeated Viswanathan Anand in just 23 moves, while Polina Shuvalova achieved her third win in four games against Kateryna Lagno. Player of the Match Linier Dominguez Perez also managed to clinch a victory over 15-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, who faltered under time pressure.

Despite these wins, the Ganges Grandmasters faced a tense situation as Arjun Erigaisi and Nino Batsiashvili both secured victories for their team, narrowing the gap to just one point. Mishra's earlier blunder proved costly, ultimately leading to his team's defeat.

Reflecting on the match, Mendonca explained, “He wanted to take my rook and make a queen. He pressed the clock, and he went from one second to three seconds. I was given one minute, but it had to be made in one second for him.”

Mishra expressed his disappointment, stating, “It really hurts because if I had won, my team would have won the match.”

In the third match of the day, the Alpine APL Pipers had a chance to extend their lead against the Continental Kings. However, Aravindh Chithambaram's victory over Vidit Gujrathi in 56 moves and Pranav V's win after forcing Volodar Murzin to resign in 63 moves secured the win for their team.

Earlier, the CheQ Mumba Masters kept pace with the Pipers on the leaderboard, as Shakhriyar Mamedyarov defeated Daniil Dubov in 42 moves, and Carissa Yip triumphed over Sara Khadem. M Pranesh had an opportunity to further extend their lead but ultimately lost to Nihal Sarin after missing a potential checkmate.
