Jayden Adams, who was only 25 years old, tragically passed away, as reported by Soccer Laduma. He had recently represented South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and was set to embark on a pre-season tour in Europe with his club.
Adams was seen as one of South Africa's most promising football talents, having made significant strides over the last two seasons, culminating in his selection for the national team's World Cup roster.
Brendine Johnson, a mentor to Adams, expressed the profound grief felt by the family and those close to him. He noted that Adams had returned from the World Cup in high spirits and was eagerly anticipating the upcoming season, making the news of his passing even more tragic.
"At this moment, things are still raw. The family wouldn’t want to be contacted right now; they wouldn’t be able to respond. This loss has shattered everyone, especially after returning from the World Cup. I had a close conversation with him on Thursday; he was really positive about returning and being a CAF champion, knowing what lay ahead. He cherished his time with family," Johnson shared, as quoted by Soccer Laduma.
"I don’t even have words to express this loss, but we ask for respect for the family’s privacy. Yes, I can confirm that he has passed. This was unexpected," Johnson added.
During the World Cup, South Africa faced a 1-0 defeat against co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32, leading to their elimination from the tournament.
