New Delhi, Sep 10: New Zealand's explosive opener, Tim Seifert, has officially joined the Sydney Sixers for a one-year contract, transitioning from the Melbourne Renegades.

Seifert, who showcased impressive form while playing for the Manchester Super Giants in The Hundred, is set to enhance the Sixers' batting lineup, especially with Steve Smith likely absent from BBL 16 due to international duties.

This development raises questions about Babar Azam's position within the team, following a disappointing season where he managed only 202 runs across 11 innings at a strike rate of 103.06.

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining the Sixers, Seifert stated, "The Sixers are among the most esteemed and successful teams in the league, so it's an honor to be part of this group," as reported by cricket.com.au.

He added, "I've always enjoyed playing cricket in Australia, and the Big Bash League is a tournament I truly love. I'm excited about the chance to wear the magenta and contribute to the team's success."

Sixers General Manager Rachael Haynes welcomed Seifert, highlighting his exceptional batting skills. "Tim is one of the top T20 batsmen globally, and his recent performance as player of the tournament in The Hundred exemplifies the caliber he brings," Haynes remarked.

"We have admired his talent for a long time, and his experience, aggressive style, and ability to win matches make him a perfect addition to the Sixers. We are delighted to have him on board," she added.

With Seifert's arrival, the Sixers now boast two strong wicket-keeping options, including franchise regular Josh Philippe.

Seifert made his debut in The Hundred in 2026 for the Manchester Super Giants, contributing to their championship win with 394 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 168.37, including a crucial 72 off 38 balls in the final against Trent Rockets.

Additionally, he was the second-highest run-scorer in the T20 World Cup 206, amassing 326 runs and playing a vital role in New Zealand's runner-up finish.
