Tilak Varma Discusses Batting Strategy and Leadership Ahead of Fourth T20I
Tilak Varma's Insights on Batting and Leadership
Auckland [New Zealand], October 29: Ahead of the fourth T20I against New Zealand, Indian batsman Tilak Varma shared his thoughts on his batting style and leadership role. He highlighted how his approach varies when batting at number three compared to the middle order, emphasizing the importance of applying pressure on bowlers during the final overs and his discussions with captain Shreyas Iyer.
Having already secured the T20I series, the Indian team is set to face New Zealand in the fourth T20I on Friday, aiming for a clean sweep in T20Is on New Zealand soil.
Tilak's impressive 51* in the second T20I showcased his ability to maintain calculated aggression while chasing a challenging total. With his team struggling at 70/5 in pursuit of 181, he formed a crucial partnership with Naman Dhir before accelerating alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy to clinch the victory.
During a press conference, Tilak explained his batting philosophy, stating that he prefers to take the game deep and break it into manageable segments. He believes that maintaining a positive mindset is key, especially in the final overs when bowlers are under significant pressure.
“I aim to take the game deep. If I focus solely on winning from the start, it adds unnecessary pressure. Instead, I analyze which bowlers to target and when to encourage my partner to take risks. Effective communication and breaking the chase into phases are crucial,” he remarked.
Tilak also expressed confidence in his power-hitting abilities, noting that while batting at number three, he often adopted an aggressive approach. However, in the middle order, he focuses on building partnerships and allowing his batting partner to play freely.
“I’ve always had a power game, but my strategy changes based on my batting position. At number three, I aimed to set an aggressive tone, while at number five or six, I prioritize taking the game deep and absorbing pressure,” he explained.
With 657 runs at an average of 41.06 and a strike rate exceeding 148 while batting at number three, Tilak has proven his capabilities. After facing challenges against spin bowling during the home T20 World Cup, he transitioned to a middle-order role, where he has excelled with 601 runs at an average of 50.08 and a strike rate of 166.48.
Tilak also discussed his leadership experience, mentioning his roles in state cricket for Hyderabad and with India A and the Emerging team. He aims to support Shreyas Iyer with his insights during high-pressure T20 matches.
“Having captained various formats, I share my knowledge and suggestions with Shreyas on the field. T20 cricket is intense, and it’s essential for a captain to have support. Our constant communication helps us strategize effectively,” he concluded.
