T20 World Cup Travel Chaos: West Indies and South Africa Stranded in India
Travel Issues Arise for T20 World Cup Teams
The ongoing crisis in the Middle East has created significant travel challenges for teams participating in the T20 World Cup. Following their elimination, all visiting teams are currently unable to leave India. The West Indies were ousted from the tournament last Sunday (March 1), while South Africa concluded their participation on Wednesday (March 4) but remains in the country. Both teams are presently in Kolkata, where they played their final matches.
Daren Sammy, the head coach of the West Indies, has taken to social media to express his frustration, urging officials to facilitate their return home. The situation became contentious when it was revealed that the England team managed to depart on Saturday (March 7), just two days after their semifinal loss to India in Mumbai. South African cricketer Quinton de Kock criticized the ICC on Instagram, questioning the disparity in treatment among teams. He remarked, “Funny @icc, we have heard nothing! Meanwhile, England are leaving before us somehow? @westindies and @proteasmencsa are just in the dark! Strange how different teams have more pull than others.”
Michael Vaughan, a former captain of England, also raised concerns regarding the unequal treatment of the teams. He stated, “So England got knocked out on Thursday and gets a charter home today... West Indies went out last Sunday and are still in Kolkata... SA is in the same position. That’s where the power is all wrong. All teams in this situation should be treated the same. Just because you are more powerful at the ICC table shouldn’t count.”
Why Are England Departing While West Indies and South Africa Remain?
According to a report from ESPN Cricinfo, a charter flight was organized for England, allowing them to travel directly from Mumbai to London. In contrast, separate arrangements have been made for South Africa and the West Indies, who will fly together from Kolkata to Johannesburg. From there, the West Indies will continue their journey to Antigua. However, neither team has received confirmation regarding their departure schedule.
Due to the ongoing situation, teams have faced difficulties utilizing commercial airlines, as flights are not operating at full capacity. The Zimbabwe team also experienced delays before securing a charter flight back home.
