Suvarna Raj's New Role Following Asian Para Games Triumph

New Delhi, November 6: Para-athlete Suvarna Raj, who clinched gold in the women's discus throw F54 category at the Asian Para Games 2026, expressed her heartfelt thanks to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu for her recent appointment as the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities in Delhi.

Following her impressive victory at the Para Asian Games, the Lieutenant Governor confirmed Suvarna's selection for the commissioner role. This decision was made after reviewing a shortlist of three candidates put forward by the Search-cum-Selection Committee, based on the committee's meeting records and candidate qualifications.

In a conversation with the media after an event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with members of the Indian team at the Para Asian Games, Suvarna expressed her gratitude for the appointment, emphasizing her goal to create more opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

“After winning my medal on October 22, the Delhi LG announced my appointment the very next day. Although I haven't received my official appointment letter yet, I want to thank CM Rekha Gupta and LG Sir. Over the next three years, I aim to open new doors for persons with disabilities,” she stated.

Suvarna also shared her thoughts on her interaction with Prime Minister Modi, describing it as uplifting and motivating, stating that his encouragement bolsters the resolve of athletes.

During the meeting at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi, PM Modi congratulated the Indian contingent for their remarkable achievements in Aichi-Nagoya, where India finished fourth overall, securing a total of 114 medals.

Reflecting on her experience with the Prime Minister, Suvarna noted, “It was an incredible moment for us. We were thrilled to engage with him. I mentioned my involvement in the Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan), and it was wonderful to see him connect with everyone.”

“When the Prime Minister of your nation supports you, it significantly boosts your determination. It inspires you to strive harder. From winning 14 medals in 2014 to achieving 114 in 2016, his support has been crucial. We finished fourth in the Asian Para Games 2026, and we are determined to reach the top position within the next decade,” she concluded.
