Suryakumar Yadav Reflects on India's Historic T20 World Cup Victory
A Momentous Win for India
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], March 9: After India's remarkable victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, captain Suryakumar Yadav attributed his success to a pivotal catch he made during the 2024 T20 World Cup. This catch, which dismissed South African batsman David Miller in the final over, was crucial in securing India's championship title.
Yadav executed a breathtaking catch at the boundary, managing to throw the ball up as he was propelled over the edge, only to step back in and complete the catch.
"This journey has been incredible. Criticism is part of life; you can't escape it. If you perform well, people will praise you, and if not, they won't. It's a simple reality that every athlete must accept. The transition from 2023 to winning in Barbados in 2024 was life-changing for me. That catch was a defining moment of the tournament. Leading this fantastic team into the World Cup in India was special, especially since no team has ever won on home soil. Playing the T20 World Cup in India brings a unique energy and excitement," Yadav expressed.
"I encouraged everyone to embrace the anticipation that comes with playing in India during the T20 World Cup. People have high expectations, and that adds to the enjoyment. Our journey began with that excitement, and the way we played and ultimately won the trophy reflects that spirit. It has been a beautiful experience, and I hope it continues," he added during a press conference after the match.
India's top-order batsmen, including Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan, delivered a stellar performance, complemented by impressive bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel, leading the team to a historic 96-run victory over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Yadav also highlighted the team's goal of breaking the 'no home team wins' curse in World Cups. He stressed the importance of adhering to their established processes, which ultimately proved effective. The team's confidence surged after their match against Zimbabwe in Chennai, and they gained momentum following a strong performance against the West Indies at Eden Gardens.
"From the start of the tournament, our aim was to win the World Cup in India, especially since many believed no home team had ever achieved this. We wanted to change that narrative. While aiming for victory, it was crucial to focus on our processes and routines. I reminded everyone to play as we had been for the past year and a half. After our match in Chennai against Zimbabwe, I sensed we were evolving our style of play. The confidence in the team grew significantly after our game at Eden Gardens, where everyone was truly enjoying the sport. That was our turning point," he concluded.
With this victory, India made history as the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, the first to secure back-to-back titles, and the first to claim three T20 World Cup championships.
