Suryakumar Yadav Faces Captaincy Change Ahead of T20I Series

Suryakumar Yadav is facing the possibility of losing his T20I captaincy as selectors prepare to announce the squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and England. Despite leading India to a T20 World Cup victory, his recent batting struggles may cost him his position. Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif advocates for Yadav's retention, citing his leadership success. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer is poised to take over as captain, returning to the T20I format after a hiatus and bringing with him a strong IPL track record. This transition could mark a significant shift in India's cricket leadership.

Suryakumar Yadav's Captaincy Under Threat

Suryakumar Yadav is on the verge of losing his role as T20I captain, with the selectors expected to announce the squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and England on Saturday (June 6). Despite having led the team to success, including retaining the T20 World Cup trophy, his recent batting performance has been underwhelming, with only one notable innings against the USA. This may not be sufficient for him to keep his captaincy.

In light of the potential captaincy change, former cricketer Mohammad Kaif expressed his views, emphasizing that a winning captain should receive support. He stated, "Surya won the trophy as captain, so he deserves to be in the team. While he may not be scoring runs, the focus should be on maintaining the trophy and the team's overall performance. If the team is succeeding, but Surya is struggling with his form, it might be too harsh to judge him solely on that. He has proven himself as a leader and should be given more opportunities. His track record has been impressive, and a winning captain deserves backing," Kaif mentioned on his YouTube channel.

Shreyas Iyer Poised to Take Over as Captain

Shreyas Iyer Likely to Step In

Shreyas Iyer is anticipated to be appointed as India's new T20I captain following Suryakumar's expected removal. The right-handed batsman has not participated in a T20I match since December 2023 but is set to make his comeback in this leadership role. His impressive performance in the IPL has earned him this opportunity. Iyer previously led the Delhi Capitals (DC) to their first final in 2020 and guided the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a title victory in 2024. He also played a crucial role in Punjab Kings (PBKS) reaching the IPL final in 2025 and captained Mumbai to a title in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024-25.
